In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this. Making decisions about starting university immediately after finishing secondary education or having a gap year is one of the issues that many a students should deal with. Although spending one year to working or take taking trips around the world have some benefits, it may also act as a deterrent to individuals’ success. In this essay, the compelling reasons on the both sides of this argument will be discussed. Finishing high school coincides with the time the students come of age, so they might be tired of years of education. In addition, people are considerably more adventurous and they are probably more willing to take risk taker than any other period of their lives. So crucial is the situation that it can affect the individuals’ success in future. Hence, they must go through it and make a right decision about it. At the first glance, if they start tertiary education just after their high school, they would have more opportunity to achieve a better job position as they surpass their peers who choose to have a gap year. However, they would be deprived from of obtaining new experiment by working. Moreover, spending a year to travel results in a good chance for students to recovery and refresh themselves as well as finding new ideas about what they want to do in their upcoming career. Another argument is that students who are interested to work before university, may find it harder to leave their position to take university courses due to the financial independence accruing resulting from working. Therefore, this people are usually lese keen to on further education. In summary, although there are cogent arguments on the both sides of the controversy, for individuals who are looking for higher education having a gap year is not generally beneficial despite its advantages.
