- Some people think that Universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed n the workplace. Others think that the true functions of university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer. - What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a University? More than a decade there has been discussion about the subjects that students need to learn at the universities. Preparing students at University for future workplace or the idea of providing students with intricately detailed knowledge is a controversial debate. This essay partially contributes to the former idea while believe in various cases in latter one. On one hand, there are students who are determined in their decisions for future career and take their academic steps towards that path. For example, some students planned to become a physician or a dentist. Rearing future physicians or dentists, University’s main function obviously is to provide a pre-planned syllabus and curriculum to train the experts for relevant workplace. On the other hand, education system in tertiary level should be dispensed with broader knowledge for the young learner who their future plans are not vivid and need more time to figure it out. They need to learn more new subjects, by and large, to find their future path. In an instance, two years of general study on subjects such as sociology, psychology and some science courses could helpstudents to make a firmer decision. Or to give a more tangible example, in many countries for studying law students need to first study few years and then they shall go for learning practicality of law and become a lawyer which will give enough time to the learners to decide if they need to continue to become a lawyer or follow other directions. In conclusion, out of this controversial debate this essay discussed both sides of the university function. Universities may tend to focus on knowledge and practical theories at the same time hence to thrive future employees and physicians.
