Around the world more and more people today are living in urban areas. Why is this? What problems does this cause? Cities are said to be the magnet of population. Industrialization and automation have enhanced mass production thus decreasing the necessity for untrained labour force. Consequently, the rate of migration from urban to rural areas hasis dramatically increased. This is an inherently neutral phenomena phenomenon but beneath the surface, complicated issues such as shanty towns, strain on infrastructure and cultural conflict have entangled the authorities. An increase in population is usually associated with high urban high growth which per se is a common source of other critical issues. Cities are overpopulated and cannot afford proper facilities to city dwellers. Due to lack of resources, the government attempts to control urban sprawl may fail and then unlicensed building would be ubiquitous. Naturally, not only is the appearance of the city but also the its culture of society is under pressure. A mixture of unemployment, drug and juvenile delinquency are the basic ingredients of nasty soup du jour in all shanty towns across the world. From the other point of view, environmental issues such as drought, famine, and lack of adequate percipiation precipitation force people to migrate to industrial zones in hope for of better possible job vacancies. For an inexperienced, illiterate workforce, big cities is are a mirage ultimately. Noting more than joblessness, drug and homelessness is their share of the cake of wealth in modern communities. Rarely can they contribute to society in a meaningful form. Crime and insecurity are rooted in cultural conflict, overpopulation and lack of proper education. Least I hope it does not lead to a point where the issue is addressed by immigration which per se is not a panacea but an incurable wound which is the source of other complex issues which the stench of whichthe problem has filled slum areas. Were I to choose between life in a big city of a small one, I would rather the second none. However, decentralization and equality should be moved to the forefront of the agenda. If facilities are designed for a socioeconomically balanced plan, concentration of population in megacities is meaningless.
