The world today is a safer place than it was a hundred years ago, and governments should stop spending large amounts of money on their armed forces. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience. People from all walks of life are nowadays witnessed to drastic changes in every aspect of life. Unlike the last centuries, it seems likely that no longer are great powers looking for military invasions of other nations by force, hence the importance of suspension of spending on armed forces, and the dedication of public funds on to educational purposes. When it comes to this controversial notion, I maintain that though reduction on in the military budget has many advantages, still a defenseless country can be a potential target for militia groups. Many a person strongly holds the idea that gone are the days when people inside a territory needed powerful defensive forces to protect them from possible foreign invasions. Members of society today are needed to be equipped with insight to protect themselves against probable threats against their national interest. The United nations alongside a wide range of non-governmental organizations is now working night and day to widespread peace across the globe which definitely cannot be reached unless arms race/weaponry rivalry comes to an end amongst superpowers. NPT is an outstanding example of this kind of effort to reduce spending on nuclear weapons. Having said that, is it thoroughly possible to stop or reduce spending on armed forces or is this is a purely hypothetical dream? If governments stop spending on their armed forces what will happen if a terrorist group attacks civilians? That is why an overwhelming majority of individuals opine that highly trained military forces equipped with very advanced equipment are necessary for each and every country. In retrospect, if military forces in the Middle East would have had been well equipped, enough a terrorist group called ISIS had would not have taken inflicted such a huge loss of lives number of toll from of innocent people. To cut a long story short, I would like to reaffirm that though spending on military forces is an obligation in this day and age, officials have to note that it is a slippery slope which can lead to arms race again similar and most probably worse than what the world experienced during the cold war. I believe it is high time people across the globe teach taught one another the idea that living in peace is what we need more than weaponry.
