Some people believe that tax is a must for societies. Others, however, disagree as they see it is an imposition largely misspent by governments. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Many believe that taxation is essential to the functioning of a society and is the most important source of governmental revenue. In contrast, some people believe it is an infliction which is spends spent unwisely by governments. The proponents of taxation believe that it is essential for the community due to some reasons. Firstly, the primary goal of a national tax system is to generate revenues to pay for the government’s expenditure at all levels because the governments per se do not have income and for developing a civilized society, they need the money that must be paid by citizens. secondly, they claim that taxes are commonly levied on labour income to finance retirement benefits, medical payment and other social security programs, all of which are likely to benefit the taxpayers. Another reason is that hightax countries have been more successful in achieving their social objectives than low-tax countries and their countries are accountable to the public ‘s needs. Moreover, taxation causes/helps income to be distributed significantly more equally, so it leads to lower rates of poverty and class differences across almost all social groups. Therefore, they feel more economic security. For example, workers in Finland enjoy one of the highest levels of economic security among workers in the industrialized countries and in terms of health and education they have a high rate in the world. Some people have a divergent view; they believe that citizens generally have no inclination to pay tax because the government would not be able to provide a proper safety net if they lost their income due to job loss, illness or old age. Besides, many much of the state spending is unnecessary such as governmental ceremonies such as British people that help fund the royal family by paying tax. Another reason is that the government have opaque a central roles in important activities such as encouraging research and innovation, fighting disease and monitoring food safety but they do not allocate budget to these cases/causes. In conclusion, I believe taxation is essential for any community, because it can bring safety and welfare in all aspects for citizens and lower the percentage of the population who live below the poverty line.
