Restoration of old buildings in main cities involves enormous government expenditure. It would be more beneficial to spend this money to build new houses and roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include examples from your own experience. These days urban construction is one of the critical parts of city management. Some prefer to rebuild new ones instead of maintaining of old buildings and streets and their main reason for this decision usually is cost and time. However, it would seem that there are many other factors in city management that tell us to keep our urban heritages and overhaul them. Primarily, each city around the world is remembered by its design and looks of streets, neighbourhoods as well as special elements. However, if a government or local council planes to knock down and rebuild them, they gradually would destroy backgrounds and collective memory of the past and current citizens. This trend leads to loss of people’s attachment to their city and they also convert to people who help to more distraction on the city. For instance, if Paris’s streets had been demolished and rebuilt, today there were not any narrow famous streets in there where most Parisians and tourists love to walk and getting lost in. Second, for restoration and renovation of a building, we generally require fewer resources and lower energy that will be better for environment. While it seems that new buildings are more efficient especially in terms of thermal control, the cost of new building construction is so high that is not worth trying and by madding some precise modifications, we can gain our points in efficient energy usage. One of the best example of old cities that has had successful experience in improving efficient energy use in homes is Copenhagen where by using modern means not only has this city decreased home energy usage, but also keep kept all their old and historical buildings. In conclusion, although there are some benefits from making new roads and house like lower cost or time, if city governors just concentrate on cost and time, our cities will change to some boring and soulless places where no generations can have emotion relation with it.
