Cambridge 11 – Test 1 – Page 31. Employers sometimes ask people applying for jobs for personal information, such as their hobbies and interests, and whether they are married or single. Some people say that this information may be relevant and useful. Others disagree. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Drawing a vivid line between personal life and public profile is a critical decision for a large number of people. Companies may inquire job applicants about some private data like their hobbies and interests or their relationship status. That is an inquest some job seekers approve of whilst some others don't. I believe that we have to be careful about questions which we answer in application forms and thus I find myself in the camp of opponents of revealing these kinds of information to employers. However, both camps have their own explanations. For those who confirm the legitimacy of asking employees about their private life, this is a rational way for employers to collect information about an applicant's characteristics. These kinds of data are not included in the resume and businesses have to look for a reliable method to assess certain qualifications in each one of the candidates. Qualifications like honesty, being responsible(responsibleness), punctuality and other characteristics they might look for. Yet, the second group argues that revealing personal details to employers could lead to/end up in awkward situations or misconduct. Consider an applicant who is a divorcée. If she were where asked about her relationship, she would be embarrassed. Besides, companies might misuse these kinds of information. There are reported cases that corporations forced their employees to stop spending time for certain activities or asked workers to hand over login data of their social network accounts. To sum up, while gathering private information from application forms seems to be a fairly acceptable way for evaluating applicants' characteristics, the boundaries of these kinds of information could be really/extremely controversial. Employers have to be extremely careful about what they ask and employers have to be thoroughly sensitive regarding the data that they are disclosing.in case of what they are giving up.
