Behrad Khalaf IETLS Class (Sunday‐Tuesday) August 22 2015 Mobile phones and internet have made it easier to stay in contact with other people. However, as a lot of time is spent using telephones and computers, there is less faceto‐ face contact and direct communication. Is the growing use of communications technology a positive or negative development of society? Living in the twenty first century, our lives are so entangled with technology, smart phones in particular, that we cannot imagine the world without it. Nonetheless, it is now more necessary than ever before to take a closer look at the situation and see where we are standing. Nobody can deny that it has become much easier to communicate. Video calls have amazingly replaced letters in no time and it is now incredibly effortless to contact family members and friends wherever they are. Moreover, you can have the latest news on your screen while coming back from work in the subway, for instance. This has risen raised up the social awareness in general. However, long exposure to the internet has deprived us from having a real world experience. We watch the world through our cell phone screens, smile for selfies only, and hardly ever pay our relatives a visit. Our worst nightmare is not having access to the internet. Unfortunately as Einstein once warned, technology has surpassed our human interactions and the world is having a generation of idiots. What is called the smart phone revolution is mostly affecting younger generations. Children, today, have fewer less interpersonal skills and more physical difficulties, like obesity for an example. They are so much exposed to pornographic and violent content that their mental health is becoming questionable. Consequently, while we are enjoying the latest advancements in communication technology, we cannot ignore the cultural genocide they are perpetrating. We need to educate ourselves how to use our mobile phones and how to get the most out of them, otherwise it will cause us more harm than good
